Scope of work

  • 240 V dryer receptacle installation
  • Dedicated 30A dryer circuits
  • Stacked laundry outlet relocation
  • Basement laundry room wiring
  • Panel breaker space checks
  • Cable-route planning and fishing
  • ESA notification where required
  • Cleanup after the work

Dryer outlet installation means a dedicated 240 V circuit built for the appliance

An electric dryer is not a regular plug-in appliance. Most electric dryers need a dedicated 240 V dryer receptacle on a properly sized branch circuit, with the breaker, cable, receptacle, box, and terminations matched to the dryer manufacturer’s requirements and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.

City Power installs dryer outlets for new appliances, laundry renovations, stacked washer-dryer layouts, and basement laundry rooms across Toronto and the GTA. The work starts with the panel, not the wall opening. We check whether there is breaker space, whether the existing panel can accept the correct breaker, and whether the route from the panel to the laundry area is practical without unnecessary damage.

A proper dryer outlet installation usually includes:

  • Verifying the dryer nameplate and plug configuration
  • Confirming whether the circuit is new, existing, or being relocated
  • Checking panel capacity, breaker compatibility, and available spaces
  • Planning the cable path through unfinished areas, joists, closets, or finished walls
  • Installing the correct electrical box and 240 V receptacle
  • Labelling the breaker and testing voltage at the receptacle
  • Filing the ESA notification where required and arranging inspection

For related high-load appliance wiring, see our dedicated circuit installation service. Dryer circuits are one of the common reasons homeowners call when a renovation moves the laundry away from the original builder location.

You need this service when the dryer location changes or the old outlet is wrong

The most common call is a new dryer purchase where the delivery crew refuses to connect because the outlet is missing, damaged, too far away, or not compatible with the appliance cord. Another common situation is a laundry renovation: moving side-by-side machines to a stacked closet, moving laundry from the main floor to the basement, or adding a laundry area near a bathroom or utility room.

We also see older dryer wiring that should be reviewed before reuse. Warning signs include a loose receptacle, heat marks on the faceplate, a plug that does not sit firmly, a breaker that trips under load, an unlabelled circuit, or a cable that disappears through an unfinished hole without proper protection. These are not cosmetic issues. A dryer is a continuous heavy load compared with a lamp or small appliance, and weak connections can overheat.

Stacked laundry needs extra planning. The outlet must be placed where the dryer cord reaches without an extension cord, while still allowing the dryer vent, water lines, drain, and shutoff valves to fit. In tight closets, a few inches matter. We plan the receptacle location with the appliance dimensions, stacking kit, door swing, and service access in mind so the machines do not crush the cord or block the vent.

Basement laundry rooms bring a different set of issues. The panel may be close, but the route can cross finished ceilings, ducts, beams, foundation walls, or fire separations. We look for a clean path before quoting: sometimes the best route is through an unfinished utility area; other times it means a short surface conduit run in a mechanical room instead of opening finished drywall. If your basement work also includes lighting, outlets, or a new panel area, our main services page can help you group the electrical scope into one visit.

ESA notification is required for new dryer circuits and many relocations

In Ontario, new electrical wiring is not just a handyman task. City Power is a Licensed Electrical Contractor, ECRA/ESA #7015314, founded and run by Sam, a licensed electrician with fifteen-plus years in the trade. Where the work requires it, we file the ESA notification, complete the installation to the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and coordinate inspection.

A dryer outlet replacement in the exact same location may be simple, but adding a new 240 V circuit, extending a dryer circuit, or relocating the outlet is different. The inspector may look at the breaker, conductor size, cable support and protection, box fill, grounding and bonding, receptacle rating, panel labelling, and whether the work matches the permit scope.

We do not assume your panel is ready just because there is one empty-looking spot. Some panels are full, some have tandem breaker limits, some breakers are obsolete or incompatible, and some homes need load considerations before another 240 V appliance is added. If a panel is crowded but otherwise adequate, a subpanel installation may be discussed. If the issue is only a missing circuit and the panel has proper space and capacity, the dryer circuit is normally more straightforward.

We also avoid unsafe shortcuts:

  • No extension cords for electric dryers
  • No sharing the dryer circuit with other receptacles
  • No undersized cable or mismatched breaker sizes
  • No loose surface cable where it can be damaged
  • No leaving unlabelled breakers behind

If your laundry upgrade also involves smart controls, USB charging, or standard receptacle upgrades nearby, those are separate from the dryer circuit. See USB and smart outlet installation for low-load convenience outlets; the dryer still needs its own properly rated circuit.

The visit starts with the panel, route, and appliance details

For a dryer outlet installation, we first ask what is being installed and where: electric dryer model if available, side-by-side or stacked, main-floor or basement laundry, finished or unfinished walls, and approximate distance to the panel. Photos of the panel, the proposed laundry wall, and the dryer plug help, but a site visit is often the clearest way to quote accurately.

On site, we open the panel cover only as appropriate, verify breaker space, identify a cable route, and confirm whether drilling, fishing, conduit, or surface protection is needed. We also look at practical details that affect the finished result: vent location, floor levelling space, door trim, cabinet panels, shutoff valves, and whether the receptacle would be trapped behind a stacked unit.

Once the route is agreed, we provide a free written estimate. Heavier 30A–50A circuits (dryers, ranges, hot tubs, EV chargers) run $400–$900. If finished walls, long cable routes, panel limitations, or related renovation work change the scope, the job is quoted in writing after a site visit. ESA fees, where required, are included in the written quote rather than treated as a surprise line item.

During the installation, we protect the work area, run and secure the cable, install the box and receptacle, terminate the breaker, label the panel, test the outlet, and clean up. If ESA inspection is required, we arrange it and make sure the work is available for review. For other 240 V equipment with different rules and loads, such as heaters or transfer equipment, the wiring approach changes; see electric baseboard heater installation or transfer switch installation if those are part of a broader renovation.

Dryer Outlet Installation FAQs

Can you install a dryer outlet where there has never been one?

Yes. We install new 240 V dryer receptacles by running a dedicated circuit from the electrical panel to the laundry location. Before quoting, we check breaker space, panel compatibility, cable routing, and the dryer’s electrical requirements. New dryer circuits require ESA notification where applicable, and we include that process in the written estimate.

Can a dryer outlet be moved for stacked laundry?

Yes. Stacked laundry often needs the dryer receptacle moved higher, lower, or to the side so the cord reaches without being crushed behind the machines. We plan the outlet with the stacking kit, dryer vent, water valves, drain, cabinet clearances, and service access in mind. If the circuit is extended or rerouted, ESA notification may be required.

How much does dryer outlet installation cost?

Heavier 30A–50A circuits (dryers, ranges, hot tubs, EV chargers) run $400–$900. The exact price depends on distance from the panel, wall access, breaker compatibility, and whether the route is finished or unfinished. If the scope is not straightforward, we provide a free written estimate after a site visit.

Can I use my old dryer outlet with a new electric dryer?

Sometimes, but it should be checked before relying on it. We verify the receptacle condition, breaker size, cable type, grounding and bonding, voltage, and whether the outlet matches the dryer cord and manufacturer requirements. Heat marks, looseness, tripping, or an unlabelled breaker are reasons to have the circuit inspected before the appliance is connected.
