USB and Smart Outlet Installation

USB and smart outlet installation replaces tired receptacles with USB-A, USB-C or app-controlled devices in kitchens, bedrooms, offices and charging areas. City Power installs approved devices safely, checks the box and grounding, and permits ESA work where required.

USB and Smart Outlet Installation — professional electrical work in Toronto & the GTA

Scope of work

  • USB-A and USB-C receptacle upgrades
  • App-controlled smart outlet installation
  • Box fill and grounding checks
  • Kitchen counter and island locations
  • Bedroom and home office charging
  • Charging-station outlet layout planning
  • Device compatibility and load review
  • ESA notification where required

USB and smart outlet installation is a device upgrade, not just a faceplate swap

A USB receptacle is deeper and more complex than a standard duplex outlet. A smart receptacle adds electronics, wireless control and sometimes a relay inside the device. That means the installation has to start with the existing box, wiring method, grounding and circuit use — not with the colour of the wall plate.

City Power installs USB-A, USB-C and app-controlled receptacle upgrades for homes, condos and small offices across Toronto and the GTA. Common locations include kitchen charging drawers, bedroom nightstands, home office desks, family-room media areas and dedicated charging-station spots where phones, tablets, cameras and laptops all pile up.

The work can include:

  • Replacing a standard receptacle with a USB-A, USB-C or combination USB-A/USB-C device
  • Installing a smart outlet that can be controlled by an app, schedule or voice assistant
  • Checking whether the existing electrical box has enough space for the larger device
  • Confirming the outlet is properly grounded before installing electronics-heavy receptacles
  • Verifying whether the location needs GFCI, AFCI or tamper-resistant protection
  • Replacing worn, loose or painted-over receptacles and plates
  • Labelling switched outlets so smart devices do not fight an existing wall switch

If you are upgrading several outlets at once, we can group them with other switch and outlet replacement work so the layout is consistent and the visit is efficient.

You need this when charging is constant, cords are cluttered, or the outlet is in the wrong place

The best USB and smart outlet locations are the ones you actually use every day. A kitchen counter outlet may be convenient for phones, but it may also be in a GFCI-protected zone and close to water. A bedroom outlet may be perfect for USB-C charging, but the box may be too shallow for a deep device. A home office outlet may need surge protection or a better circuit plan if it feeds monitors, docks, printers and network gear.

We often see the same practical problems:

  • Phone chargers blocking both receptacle openings
  • Power bars used permanently behind desks or beds
  • Loose outlets that no longer hold plugs firmly
  • Furniture hiding the only usable receptacle in the room
  • Smart plugs sticking too far out from the wall
  • Kitchen counter outlets overloaded with small appliances and chargers
  • Old two-slot receptacles where grounded devices should not be used

A smart outlet can be useful for lamps, holiday lighting, coffee stations, fans and device charging schedules. It is not the right fix for every load. Space heaters, large appliances, sump pumps, refrigerators, medical equipment and anything that should not turn off by accident need a careful compatibility discussion before any app-controlled receptacle is installed.

For lighting control, a smart receptacle is sometimes the wrong device. If the goal is to control ceiling or wall lighting, a properly matched smart switch or dimmer may be better. See our dimmer switch installation page for that type of control work.

Code, grounding and box fill decide what can be installed

A USB or smart outlet must be installed in a way that meets the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and uses approved electrical equipment. The device also has to fit the wiring in the wall. Many USB and smart receptacles are deeper than basic devices, and a crowded box can become a code problem or a failure point.

Before installing, we check:

  • Box fill: whether the box has enough volume for the conductors, grounds, internal clamps and the deeper receptacle body.
  • Grounding: whether a proper bonding conductor is present and connected. USB and smart electronics should not be installed as a shortcut around missing grounding.
  • Line and load conductors: especially where GFCI protection, switched outlets or multi-wire branch circuits are present.
  • Device rating: whether the receptacle rating suits the circuit and the connected loads.
  • Protection type: whether the location needs GFCI protection, AFCI protection, or both under current code and the existing installation conditions.
  • Approval markings: whether the device is approved for use in Ontario.

Kitchens need extra care. Counter receptacles, island receptacles and locations near sinks are not the same as a bedroom wall outlet. A USB-C receptacle in a kitchen may be possible, but it still has to respect required protection and the way the existing split, GFCI or dedicated small-appliance circuits were wired.

Condos add another layer. Some buildings have rules about in-suite electrical work, permitted work hours and access requirements. If new wiring is needed, management may ask for proof that a licensed electrical contractor is doing the work. City Power is an ECRA/ESA Licensed Electrical Contractor, ECRA/ESA #7015314, and we file ESA notifications where required.

A simple device replacement may be straightforward. Adding a new outlet location, fishing new cable, changing a circuit, adding a box, or correcting unsafe wiring is different. Those situations may require an ESA notification and inspection. We tell you before the work starts, and every job is permitted with the ESA where required and inspected.

The visit is planned around safe access, clean work and written pricing

A typical visit starts with a short walkthrough. We ask what you want each outlet to do: fast USB-C charging by the bed, a clean desk outlet for a laptop dock, an app-controlled lamp receptacle, or a charging station in a kitchen, mudroom or family room. Then we remove the cover plate and inspect the existing box and conductors before committing to the device.

If the box is suitable, the work is usually a clean device replacement: power off, test, remove the old receptacle, make proper terminations, bond the device, install the plate, restore power and test the outlet. For USB devices, we confirm both the 120V receptacle and the USB ports operate. For smart outlets, we confirm basic switching and help with the electrical side of setup; app account, Wi-Fi and platform settings remain the homeowner’s system.

If the box is too shallow or crowded, we explain the options. Sometimes the fix is a deeper approved box. Sometimes the wiring has to be cleaned up first. If there is no ground, damaged insulation, reversed polarity, overheating marks, aluminum wiring, or amateur splices, the safe answer may be repair before upgrade.

Pricing depends on the device, the number of outlets, access and whether new wiring or ESA notification is required. From the published price sheet, standard outlet or switch replacement runs $80–$120 each, with volume pricing for whole-home refreshes. Installed specialty devices — including GFCI, USB-C combo outlets, smart dimmers, and timers — typically range from $120–$250 depending on the model. Installing a GFCI receptacle generally costs $120–$180 per outlet, with parts included. Anything outside those bands is quoted in writing after a site visit.

If the outlet upgrade reveals that you actually need a new branch circuit for a workstation, appliance or equipment location, we can plan that separately. For USB or smart outlet projects, adding a standard 20A dedicated circuit from the panel usually runs $250–$500, based on the run length and wall finishes involved. For larger capacity planning, see subpanel installation. For general electrical work beyond this outlet upgrade, our electrical services page outlines related residential and commercial options.

USB and Smart Outlet Installation FAQs

Can you install USB-C outlets anywhere in the house?

Not always. USB-C receptacles are deeper than standard outlets, so we first check box fill, grounding, conductor condition and the type of circuit. Bedrooms, offices and family rooms are often straightforward. Kitchen counters, islands and locations near sinks need extra attention because GFCI protection and existing small-appliance circuit wiring affect what can be installed.

Do smart outlets need a neutral wire?

Some smart receptacles need a neutral connection because the device electronics require constant power. Many receptacle boxes already have a neutral, but switched outlets, older wiring and unusual layouts must be checked before installation. We verify the wiring at the box and device instructions before recommending a specific smart outlet.

Will a USB outlet charge as fast as my plug-in charger?

It depends on the receptacle model and the device being charged. Some USB-C outlets provide higher charging output than older USB-A receptacles, but they still must be approved devices installed on a suitable circuit. We help choose a practical device for phones, tablets and desk charging, without overpromising charging performance.

Does USB and smart outlet installation need an ESA permit?

A simple device replacement may not need an ESA notification, but new wiring, a new outlet location, circuit changes or correction of unsafe wiring can require one. City Power is an ECRA/ESA Licensed Electrical Contractor, and every job is permitted with the ESA where required and inspected.
