Lighting & Pot Lights
Transform any room with expertly installed lighting.
About lighting & pot lightsCity Power installs and troubleshoots dimmer switches for homes that need smoother lighting control, LED compatibility, or working 3-way dimming. We replace mismatched devices, correct wiring issues, and make sure the dimmer suits the fixture load.

A dimmer has to match the light, the wiring method, and the way the circuit is switched. City Power installs standard and smart dimmers for LED pot lights, chandeliers, flush-mount fixtures, pendants, under-cabinet lighting, and other residential lighting loads across Toronto and the GTA.
The common mistake is choosing a dimmer by appearance only. Many older dimmers were made for incandescent bulbs and do not behave well with modern LED lamps or integrated LED fixtures. The result can be flicker, drop-out at low settings, buzzing at the switch, buzzing at the fixture, or lights that never turn fully off.
For LED dimmer switch installation, we check:
A single-pole dimmer controls one light or lighting group from one switch location. A 3-way dimmer works where the same lights are controlled from two locations, such as the top and bottom of stairs or both ends of a hallway. Multi-location dimming uses a compatible master dimmer with accessory controls; two ordinary dimmers on the same 3-way circuit are usually not the correct setup.
If your issue is part of a larger switch or receptacle project, the main switches and outlets service page covers standard replacements, device refreshes, and related repairs.
Dimmer problems often appear after a small change. A room worked for years with incandescent bulbs, then the bulbs were changed to LEDs and the dimmer started misbehaving. Or a fixture was replaced with an integrated LED chandelier and the old wall control no longer dims smoothly.
Call for dimmer switch installation or troubleshooting when you notice:
We also often see multi-gang switch boxes where several dimmers are packed side by side. Dimmers dissipate heat through their metal yoke, and manufacturers require derating when side tabs are removed or when several dimmers are grouped together. That matters in kitchens, basements, living rooms, and main-floor renovations where one box may control pot lights, pendants, sconces, and accent lighting.
For fixture-related work, see our light fixture installation and chandelier installation pages. If you are adding app control, scenes, or voice-compatible switches, our USB and smart outlet installation page covers related smart devices.
Dimmer installation still has to meet the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. The device must be approved for use in Canada, installed in a proper electrical box, connected with correct terminations, and matched to the circuit and load. Grounding and bonding must remain intact. Conductors cannot be crowded beyond box capacity, and damaged insulation or loose splices need to be corrected rather than hidden behind a new cover plate.
A straight replacement of an existing wall switch with a compatible dimmer may be treated differently from new wiring, depending on the exact scope. If we add a new switch leg, move a box, install new lighting, change the circuit, or correct unsafe wiring, an ESA notification may be required. City Power is a Licensed Electrical Contractor, ECRA/ESA #7015314, and dimmer switch installations are ESA-permitted and inspected when required.
For dimmers on AFCI or GFCI-protected circuits, device compatibility matters. A dimmer should not create nuisance tripping, and a lighting repair should not defeat required protection. If nuisance tripping is part of the problem, see AFCI and GFCI breaker installation for the breaker side of the system.
Smart dimmers need extra attention. Some require a neutral conductor in the switch box; some are designed to work without one but need a minimum lighting load. Some 3-way smart dimmers require an accessory switch, not a regular mechanical 3-way switch. We identify the existing conductors before choosing the control so the finished installation works reliably.
A typical visit starts by asking what changed: new bulbs, a new fixture, a renovation, a smart device, or a switch that has never worked properly. Then we turn off the circuit, remove the existing device, and inspect the box. We look for the line, load, travellers on 3-way circuits, neutral availability, grounding, box condition, and any signs of overheating.
For LED flicker, we do not assume the switch is the only cause. We consider the bulb, fixture driver, total wattage, minimum load, dimmer type, and whether multiple fixture types are mixed on one dimmer. A chandelier with replaceable LED lamps behaves differently from an integrated LED fixture with its own driver. Low-load circuits may need a different dimmer or a manufacturer-approved solution.
For 3-way and multi-location controls, we map the travellers and common conductor before connecting the dimmer. Misidentified conductors are a common reason one switch position disables the other. After installation, we test from every control location, check the full dimming range, set trim levels where the dimmer allows it, and confirm the cover plate sits properly.
Standard outlet or switch replacement runs $80–$120 each, with volume pricing for whole-home refreshes. For dimmer switch installation, specialty controls such as smart dimmers and timers typically cost $120–$250 installed, depending on the device. Smart dimmers and switches run $150–$250 each installed, including professional-grade devices like Lutron Caseta or Leviton Decora Smart. If the work involves new wiring, unusual troubleshooting, fixture changes, or ESA notification, it is quoted in writing after a site visit.

The dimmer may not be compatible with the LED bulbs or fixture driver, or the total load may be below the dimmer’s minimum. Flicker can also come from mixed bulb types on one dimmer, loose connections, or a 3-way circuit wired incorrectly. We test the circuit and match the dimmer to the actual lighting load.
Yes, but it must be the right 3-way or multi-location setup. Usually one location gets the dimmer and the other gets a compatible 3-way switch or accessory control. Installing two ordinary dimmers on the same lighting circuit is usually not correct and can cause unreliable operation or device failure.
Many smart dimmers need a neutral conductor in the switch box so the device can power its electronics even when the lights are off. Some models are designed to work without a neutral, but they may have minimum load requirements. We check the wiring before recommending a smart dimmer.
