Chandelier Installation — professional electrical work in Toronto & the GTA

Scope of work

  • Rated ceiling box verification
  • Heavy fixture support upgrades
  • Foyer and stairwell chandeliers
  • Dining room fixture centring
  • High-ceiling ladder and scaffold planning
  • Dimmer compatibility and setup
  • Canopy, chain and height adjustment
  • ESA notification where required

Chandelier installation starts with support, not just wiring

A chandelier is different from a basic flush-mount light because weight, height, balance, and access all matter. Before we hang the fixture, we check whether the existing ceiling box is rated for the chandelier and whether it is properly fastened to framing. A decorative fixture can look fine for years and still be hanging from an old plastic box, a loose plaster ring, or a box that was never meant to carry that load.

City Power Electrical Services is licensed to handle chandelier installation work, ECRA/ESA #7015314. Sam is a licensed electrician with fifteen-plus years in the trade, and every chandelier installation is handled as electrical work first: safe connections, correct grounding/bonding, strain relief where required, and a canopy that covers the box cleanly without pinching conductors.

Typical chandelier work includes:

  • Removing the existing light fixture and inspecting the box
  • Confirming the chandelier weight against the support method
  • Installing or replacing a rated ceiling box when needed
  • Adding blocking or a fixture support where access allows
  • Assembling the fixture, arms, chain, stem, canopy, and mounting hardware
  • Setting fixture height over a table, island, stair opening, or foyer
  • Connecting the fixture to the wall switch or dimmer
  • Testing lamp operation, dimming range, and breaker labelling

If your project is a simple fixture swap, our light fixture installation service may be the closest match. If the fixture is heavy, high, or being relocated, a chandelier-specific visit gives us time to plan the support and access properly.

You need this service when the fixture is heavy, high, or being moved

Call us before the chandelier arrives if the fixture is oversized, multi-tiered, crystal, installed in a two-storey foyer, or going above a stairwell. Those jobs are less about “can someone reach it?” and more about how the fixture will be lifted, temporarily supported, wired, levelled, and serviced later.

Common chandelier situations we see include dining room fixtures that are off-centre from the table, builders’ lights that need to be replaced with a heavier fixture, foyer chandeliers with long chains, and high-ceiling fixtures that require a safe ladder or scaffold plan. We also check for practical issues: door swing, sightlines from the upper floor, ceiling medallion clearance, canopy size, chain length, and whether the existing switch is in the right location.

Relocating a chandelier is a bigger job than replacing one. Moving the outlet box may require opening the ceiling, fishing cable, patching around the old location, and installing a new rated support point. If you are renovating the whole room, it is often smart to plan the chandelier together with pot light installation, switches, and dimmers so the lighting layers work together instead of competing with each other.

Dimmer compatibility is another important part of the job. Many new chandeliers use integrated LED drivers or dimmable LED lamps, and not every older dimmer will work without flicker, buzzing, ghosting, or a limited dimming range. If the fixture needs a new control, we can install a compatible device through our dimmer switch installation service and test the actual fixture on site.

ESA permits depend on the scope of the electrical work

In Ontario, electrical work must follow the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. Some straightforward like-for-like fixture replacements may not require an ESA notification, but new wiring, a relocated outlet box, a new switch leg, a new dimmer location, or a support change tied to electrical work may trigger one. We file ESA notifications where required and arrange inspection when required.

The key code issue for chandeliers is that the luminaire must be supported by equipment and structure suitable for the load. The electrical box is not just a hole for wires; it is part of the support system unless the chandelier has independent structural support. We look for approved boxes, secure mounting, correct conductor splices inside an approved enclosure, grounding/bonding continuity, proper cable protection, and a switch or dimmer rated for the connected load.

If an ESA inspection applies, the inspector may look at the new box, wiring method, grounding, device ratings, and whether the work matches the notification. If we uncover unsafe older wiring, damaged insulation, missing grounding, overheated connections, or amateur splices hidden above the old fixture, we explain the issue before covering it. If a breaker or protection upgrade becomes part of the solution, we can also handle related AFCI and GFCI breaker installation where appropriate.

Condo installations can also involve building rules. Property management may require proof that the work is done by a licensed electrical contractor, restrict work hours, or require protection for elevators and common areas when large fixtures are delivered. We plan around those rules rather than treating the chandelier as a quick handyman job.

The visit includes planning, installation, cleanup, and a written quote

For a chandelier installation, we start by asking for the fixture details: approximate weight, photos of the ceiling location, ceiling height, whether there is an existing fixture, and whether the chandelier is assembled or still boxed. For high-ceiling work, we also ask about staircases, railings, flooring, furniture, and whether a ladder can be safely set up. Some foyer and stairwell installs need scaffold or special access planning before the day of work.

On site, we shut off and verify the circuit, remove the existing fixture, inspect the box and wiring, and decide whether the support is acceptable. If the box is not rated or is loose, we do not hang a heavy chandelier from it. We will quote the corrective work, which may mean replacing the box, opening a small section of ceiling, adding support from above, or coordinating with a contractor if structural blocking is needed.

Once support is confirmed, we assemble and hang the chandelier, adjust the chain or stem height, make the electrical connections, install the canopy, test the lamps or LED driver, and confirm switch or dimmer operation. We protect the work area and complete a full cleanup before leaving.

Chandelier installation is quoted in writing after a site visit because access, weight, support, ceiling height, and relocation work change the scope. Published price bands that may apply to related work are: Standard outlet or switch replacement runs $80–$120 each, with volume pricing for whole-home refreshes. Specialty devices — GFCI, USB-C combo outlets, smart dimmers, timers — range $120–$250 installed depending on the device. If the chandelier is part of a larger lighting plan, most pot light installations in the Greater Toronto Area run $100–$150 per light installed, including the LED fixture, wiring, and switching.

Chandelier Installation FAQs

Can you install a chandelier where there is already a light fixture?

Yes, if the existing wiring is safe and the ceiling box is properly rated and secured for the chandelier. We remove the old fixture, inspect the box, check grounding and conductor condition, and confirm the new fixture can be supported. If the existing box is not suitable, we quote the support correction before hanging the chandelier.

Do I need a special ceiling box for a heavy chandelier?

Often, yes. A heavy chandelier should not be hung from a basic light box unless that box and its mounting are rated for the load. Some chandeliers require an approved heavy-fixture box or independent support to framing. We check the actual site conditions, not just the fixture packaging, before making the final connection.

Can you install a chandelier on a high ceiling or over stairs?

Yes, but high-ceiling and stairwell chandeliers need safe access planning. We look at ceiling height, stair layout, railing locations, floor protection, fixture weight, and whether a ladder or scaffold can be set safely. This is why foyer and stairwell installations are usually quoted after a site visit rather than priced over the phone.

Will my existing dimmer work with a new LED chandelier?

Maybe. Older dimmers can cause LED chandeliers to flicker, buzz, glow when off, or dim poorly. We check the fixture’s driver or lamp requirements and install a compatible dimmer when needed. After installation, we test the dimming range on the actual chandelier so problems are caught before we leave.
