Lighting & Pot Lights
Transform any room with expertly installed lighting.
About lighting & pot lightsCity Power installs replacement and new light fixtures for homeowners updating builder-grade lighting, renovating rooms or fixing unsafe old connections. We handle pendants, vanity lights, flush mounts and exterior fixtures with proper box, wiring and switch checks.

A good fixture installation is more than matching black to black and white to white. Before we hang a pendant, vanity light, flush mount or exterior fixture, we check what is behind the canopy: the electrical box, cable condition, grounding, switch leg and mounting hardware.
Many fixture problems come from old or rushed work. We often find fixtures screwed into drywall instead of an electrical box, missing bonding conductors, brittle insulation near hot bulbs, loose marrettes, oversized openings hidden by a canopy, or a ceiling box that was never meant to support the new fixture. Those issues have to be corrected before the new light goes up.
For a typical visit, we can:
If you are replacing multiple ceiling lights with recessed lighting, the better fit is our pot light installation service. If the fixture is large, heavy, multi-tiered or needs special bracing, see chandelier installation.
A simple fixture swap can become electrical work quickly. Call a licensed electrician if the new fixture is heavier than the old one, the box moves when touched, the wires are short or cracked, the old fixture was flickering, the switch is warm, or the previous installer buried splices outside an approved box.
Fixture changes are also common during small renovations. A bathroom vanity light may need to shift because the mirror changed. A dining room pendant may need to be centred over a new table location. A hallway flush mount may be changed to a cleaner LED fixture. Exterior fixtures may need weather-rated boxes, proper gaskets and outdoor-rated connections so water does not get behind the fixture.
We also check compatibility with the existing switch. Some LED fixtures do not behave well on older dimmers, causing buzzing, flicker or limited dimming range. Smart controls can have their own requirements, including neutral conductors in the switch box. If your fixture project includes device upgrades, our USB and smart outlet installation page explains related device work.
The key point: if the fixture is moving, the wiring is being extended, the box is being replaced, or the switch control is changing, it is no longer just cosmetic. It should be assessed and installed as electrical work, not handyman work.
City Power Electrical Services provides light fixture installation as a Licensed Electrical Contractor, ECRA/ESA #7015314. Sam, the company’s founder and operator, brings more than fifteen years of licensed electrical experience to fixture installation work. For fixture work, we follow the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and file ESA notifications where required.
A like-for-like fixture replacement on an existing approved box is different from adding a new fixture location, extending cable, correcting hidden splices or changing the circuit. Where ESA notification is required, the job is permitted and inspected. If you are unsure, we will tell you before work starts and include the permit handling in the written scope.
Code-related details that matter on fixture jobs include:
We do not cover defects with a new canopy and leave them hidden. If we discover unsafe wiring, aluminum branch wiring, knob-and-tube, missing grounding, an overloaded box or damaged insulation, we explain the issue and quote the correction in writing before proceeding beyond the agreed scope. For broader repair or renovation needs, you can start from our residential electrical services page.
Most fixture visits begin with photos or a short call so we understand the fixture type, ceiling height, location, number of lights, and whether the existing fixture is already working. For multi-fixture jobs, photos of the current fixtures, switches and new fixture labels are helpful.
On site, we protect the work area, shut off the circuit, verify power is off, remove the old fixture and inspect the box. If the existing box, wiring and switch are compatible, we install the new fixture, make the connections, secure the canopy or mounting plate, install lamps or integrated trims where applicable, restore power and test operation. We also confirm the switch works correctly and clean up before leaving.
If the existing box is not suitable, we explain the options. That might mean replacing a damaged box, adding proper support, correcting a loose connection, repairing overheated conductors, changing an incompatible dimmer, or installing new wiring if the fixture is being moved. We provide free written estimates, and larger or uncertain scopes are quoted in writing after a site visit.
The published price sheet does not list a single flat rate for every light fixture installation because the range depends on access, ceiling height, box condition, fixture type and whether wiring changes are needed. For general GTA electrical labour context, licensed electricians in Toronto charge $95–$150 per hour in 2026, with most service calls carrying a minimum charge of $150–$250. Small jobs like replacing an outlet run $120–$250 total, while larger projects are quoted flat-rate. For a fixture-specific discussion, see how much light fixture installation costs.
City Power serves Toronto and the GTA from our North York office at 1800 Sheppard Ave E near Fairview Mall. We provide 24/7 emergency service, free written estimates, ESA permitting where required, inspection coordination, and full cleanup at the end of the job.
Yes. We can install homeowner-supplied pendants, vanity lights, flush mounts and exterior fixtures as long as the fixture is approved for use in Canada and suitable for the location. We still need to inspect the existing box, wiring and switch before installation, because the fixture cannot be safely installed if the support or connections are wrong.
A like-for-like replacement on an existing approved box is different from adding wiring, moving a light location or correcting unsafe wiring. When ESA notification is required, City Power files it and coordinates inspection. If the work is limited to a straightforward replacement, we will explain that too before starting.
We stop and show you the problem. Common issues include brittle insulation, loose splices, missing bonding, no approved electrical box, or conductors shortened by previous work. We do not hide defects behind the new canopy. Any correction beyond the original fixture swap is explained and quoted in writing before we proceed.
Yes. Exterior fixtures need extra checks because water, cold and movement can damage connections over time. We confirm the box condition, weather rating, gasket or seal, bonding and switch operation. If the old fixture allowed water behind it, we may need to repair the box or wiring before installing the new light.
