Electrical troubleshooting finds the fault before parts are changed

Electrical repair is not guesswork. A dead receptacle can be a failed device, a tripped GFCI in another room, a loose neutral in a junction box, a backstabbed connection that has opened, or a damaged cable hidden behind a finished wall. A breaker that trips can be overloaded, shorted, ground-faulting, weakened by heat, or doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Our first job is to narrow the problem safely. We test at the panel, at the device, and along the circuit until the fault makes sense. Depending on the symptom, that can include voltage testing, load testing, continuity checks with the circuit isolated, GFCI testing, breaker inspection, and tracing where a circuit actually runs.

Common repair calls include:

  • Dead outlets in one room or on one wall
  • Breakers that trip as soon as they are reset
  • Lights that flicker when appliances start
  • GFCIs that trip in kitchens, bathrooms, garages or exterior areas
  • Switches that crackle, feel hot or work intermittently
  • Half-working receptacles after renovation or painting
  • Burn marks, loose plugs or a smell from a device box

When the issue is a failed device, we can often repair it during the visit. When the fault points to damaged branch wiring, hidden junctions, knob-and-tube, aluminum terminations, or a circuit that has been extended incorrectly, we explain the escalation path clearly. That may mean device replacement, a localized wiring repair, a dedicated circuit, panel correction, or a larger wiring and rewiring repair if the circuit is unsafe to keep patching.

You need a repair visit when resetting stops being a solution

One nuisance trip can happen. Repeated trips are information. If the same breaker or GFCI trips again after you unplug the obvious load, stop resetting it and book a diagnostic visit. Breakers and GFCIs are protective devices; repeatedly forcing them back on can heat a damaged connection or keep an unsafe fault energized.

Dead outlets are another common “small” symptom that can hide a larger problem. Many receptacles are daisy-chained, so one loose feed-through connection can shut down everything downstream. We often see this at older backstabbed receptacles, kitchen counter plugs, basement circuits that were expanded over time, and exterior outlets where moisture has entered the box.

Flickering lights deserve context. A single fixture flickering is usually a lamp, dimmer, socket or connection issue. Several rooms flickering at once can point to a shared neutral, a panel connection, service-side issue, or a large load starting on the same system. If lights brighten and dim noticeably, or if you see flicker across multiple circuits, turn off sensitive electronics and call for service.

Nuisance GFCI trips also need proper testing. A GFCI can trip because it is worn, wired line/load incorrectly, protecting a downstream fault, exposed to moisture, or connected to equipment with real leakage current. Kitchens, bathrooms, garages and exterior areas have different exposure conditions, so the repair is not always “replace the GFCI and hope.”

Ontario code, ESA and safety facts affect the repair

City Power Electrical Services performs electrical repair and troubleshooting as a Licensed Electrical Contractor, ECRA/ESA #7015314. Sam, the company’s founder and operator, is a licensed electrician with more than fifteen years of repair and troubleshooting experience. For repair work in Ontario, the important point is simple: testing and diagnosis are different from altering the electrical installation.

If we are only investigating, resetting, tightening where allowed, or replacing a like-for-like device in a straightforward repair, an ESA notification may not be required in every case. If the repair involves new wiring, concealed cable replacement, panel work, new circuits, service equipment, or code corrections that require inspection, we file the ESA notification where required and arrange inspection. Every job is permitted with the ESA where required.

ESA inspection is not cosmetic. Inspectors may look at conductor size, breaker rating, box fill, grounding and bonding, GFCI/AFCI protection where applicable, panel labelling, mechanical protection for cable, outdoor-rated covers, and whether splices are made inside approved boxes that remain accessible. If a previous owner buried a junction, mixed incompatible wiring methods, or extended a circuit without proper protection, the repair may need to become a code correction.

Some symptoms also point toward known older-home wiring issues. Aluminum branch wiring requires approved terminations, not ordinary copper-only devices. Knob-and-tube circuits cannot be treated like modern grounded branch circuits. Multi-wire branch circuits need their shared neutral and breaker arrangement assessed correctly. If your repair uncovers a defect notice or a safety documentation need, we can coordinate the next step through ESA electrical safety certificate service or electrical code corrections and ESA defect repairs.

The visit is structured: diagnose, repair if practical, quote the larger fix

We start with the symptom and the timeline. What stopped working? What was plugged in? Did it happen after a storm, appliance failure, renovation, water leak, pest activity, new fixture, or breaker reset? Good troubleshooting starts with the story because electrical faults often follow a change.

At the panel, we identify the circuit, check breaker condition, confirm labelling where possible, and look for heat signs, loose conductors, double taps, damaged insulation, or mismatched breaker and wire sizes. At the room or device, we remove covers only when safe, test before touching, and inspect the box, conductors, device terminals, grounding, and downstream connections.

If the repair is minor and safe to complete during the visit, we do it and clean up before leaving. If the fault is inside finished walls, involves multiple rooms, needs new cable routing, or requires ESA notification and inspection, we stop guessing and give you a written repair scope. Larger work is quoted in writing after a site visit.

Published GTA pricing for troubleshooting and small repairs is based on the licensed electrician rate band: licensed electricians in Toronto charge $95–$150 per hour in 2026, with most service calls carrying a minimum charge of $150–$250. Small jobs like replacing an outlet run $120–$250 total, while larger projects are quoted flat-rate. Replacing a standard outlet or switch typically costs $80–$120 each, with volume rates available for full-home updates. Installed specialty devices — GFCI, USB-C combo outlets, smart dimmers, timers — generally run $120–$250, depending on the specific unit.

If troubleshooting shows that the circuit is overloaded or the wrong load was added to it, the solution may be a new dedicated circuit instead of another reset. For repair or upgrade work, a standard 20A dedicated circuit from the panel is usually $250–$500, based on run length and wall finishes. Heavier 30A–50A circuits run $400–$900. If the underlying issue is broader wiring condition, we will route the repair toward residential wiring and rewiring rather than selling another short-term patch.

City Power serves Toronto and the GTA from our North York office at Fairview Mall, Sheppard and Don Mills. We provide 24/7 emergency service, free written estimates for quoted repair work, ESA permitting where required, inspection coordination, and full cleanup.

Electrical Repair and Troubleshooting FAQs

What should I do before calling for electrical troubleshooting?

Note exactly what stopped working, which breaker or GFCI trips, and what was being used at the time. Unplug obvious loads, but do not keep resetting a breaker that trips again. If you smell burning, see scorch marks, hear buzzing, or a device feels hot, stop using that circuit and call for service.

Can a dead outlet be repaired in one visit?

Often, yes, if the cause is a failed receptacle, loose connection, tripped upstream GFCI, or accessible device-box issue. If the dead outlet is caused by damaged hidden wiring, an unsafe splice, aluminum wiring, knob-and-tube, or a panel problem, we explain the finding and quote the proper repair in writing.

Do electrical repairs need an ESA permit in Ontario?

Testing and some simple like-for-like repairs may not require an ESA notification in every case. New wiring, concealed cable replacement, panel work, new circuits, and many code corrections generally do. City Power files the ESA notification where required and arranges inspection so the repair is documented properly.

How much does electrical repair and troubleshooting cost?

Licensed electricians in Toronto charge $95–$150 per hour in 2026, with most service calls carrying a minimum charge of $150–$250. Small jobs like replacing an outlet run $120–$250 total. If troubleshooting reveals a larger wiring, panel, or circuit issue, we provide a written quote after the site visit.
