Refrigeration electrical wiring connects the cooler equipment, controls and protection the right way

Refrigeration equipment is not just “one plug for a fridge.” A commercial walk-in cooler, freezer or display case may involve a condensing unit, evaporator fans, defrost heaters, drain-line heat, door heaters, case lighting, condensate pumps, thermostats, temperature controls and alarm contacts. Each piece has to match the manufacturer’s nameplate and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.

We wire refrigeration equipment for restaurants, grocery stores, convenience stores, cafés, butcher shops and other food-service businesses across Toronto and the GTA. This page covers the electrical side: branch circuits, disconnects, panels, controls coordination, troubleshooting and ESA notification where required. For full commercial kitchen projects, see our restaurant wiring service.

Typical refrigeration electrical wiring includes:

  • Dedicated circuits for walk-in coolers and freezers
  • Power feeds for remote or rooftop condensing units
  • Evaporator fan and defrost circuit wiring
  • Display-case receptacles, hardwired feeds and lighting
  • Local disconnects or lockable disconnecting means where required
  • Control wiring coordination with the refrigeration contractor
  • Panel breaker sizing from MCA and MOP nameplate ratings
  • GFCI, grounding and bonding review where the installation calls for it

The key is coordination. The refrigeration contractor usually supplies or installs the refrigeration equipment and controls. We confirm the electrical requirements, run the wiring, make terminations, install disconnects and ensure the electrical work is ready for inspection. If a cooler is failing electrically, we can also troubleshoot the feed, breaker, disconnect, contactor power, control voltage or damaged wiring. For fault-finding on an existing system, see commercial electrical troubleshooting.

You need this service when a cooler is being installed, relocated or tripping power

Call before the refrigeration equipment arrives if you are adding a new walk-in box, replacing a compressor package, changing from plug-in cases to hardwired cases, or moving display cases during a store renovation. Early planning prevents the common problems: no spare panel capacity, the wrong voltage at the location, missing disconnects, undersized circuits, or finished walls and ceilings that have to be reopened.

You should also call when refrigeration equipment creates electrical symptoms, including:

  • Breaker trips when the compressor starts
  • Freezer warms up during defrost cycles
  • Evaporator fans do not run
  • Display cases flicker or lose case lighting
  • A disconnect is corroded, hot or damaged
  • GFCI protection trips repeatedly
  • Staff smell burning near a case, panel or disconnect
  • A rooftop unit has lost power after weather or service work

Food spoilage and business downtime make refrigeration calls different from ordinary repairs. A cooler-down situation can affect inventory, food safety and daily sales. City Power offers 24/7 emergency service, and we focus first on making the electrical supply safe, identifying whether the failure is electrical or mechanical, and giving the refrigeration technician clean, reliable power to work with.

We do not guess at refrigeration loads. We look at the equipment nameplate, installation manual and site conditions. A freezer with electric defrost may need different wiring than an off-cycle cooler. A remote condensing unit may need a different route and disconnect than a self-contained display case. A line of cases may need multiple circuits rather than one overloaded feed.

ESA permits, inspections and code details matter on refrigeration equipment

Refrigeration wiring in Ontario must comply with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. City Power Electrical Services provides refrigeration wiring as a Licensed Electrical Contractor, ECRA/ESA #7015314. Refrigeration electrical work is permitted with the ESA when required and inspected for compliance.

On refrigeration projects, the ESA inspection may look at more than whether the equipment turns on. The inspector can review conductor size, breaker rating, grounding and bonding, disconnect location, box fill, mechanical protection, wet-location suitability, support of wiring, panel labelling and whether the installation matches the equipment rating. If a previous installation was improvised, we may need to correct those issues before new equipment can be safely energized.

Important refrigeration-specific electrical checks include:

  • Matching circuit size to the equipment nameplate, including MCA and maximum overcurrent protection
  • Providing a safe way to disconnect power for servicing
  • Protecting wiring where cases are cleaned, moved or exposed to carts
  • Avoiding overloaded multi-outlet arrangements behind display cases
  • Separating control wiring and line-voltage wiring where required
  • Coordinating rooftop or outdoor wiring with weather-rated equipment
  • Labelling breakers clearly so staff and service technicians can isolate equipment quickly

If you have an ESA defect notice, insurance request, landlord requirement or inspection issue tied to refrigeration wiring, we can document the electrical condition and complete the required repairs. Related repair work is handled through our electrical code corrections and ESA defect repairs service.

For some businesses, refrigeration wiring also overlaps with landlord or property-management responsibilities. A plaza unit, food court, multi-tenant building or leased restaurant may require written approval before panel work, rooftop conduit, coring or shutdowns. We coordinate the electrical scope so the operator, landlord, refrigeration contractor and utility constraints are understood before work starts.

The visit starts with the equipment, the panel and the shutdown plan

For a new installation, we start by asking for the make and model of the cooler, freezer, condensing unit or display cases. If the equipment is already on site, we read the nameplates directly. We check the panel, available breaker spaces, voltage, phase, grounding, route options and the location of disconnects. We also look at whether work must happen after hours to avoid interrupting service.

For an urgent failure, the first step is safety. We check the panel, breaker, disconnect, receptacle or hardwired connection, visible damage, heat marks, loose terminations and voltage at the equipment. If the electrical supply is good, we can confirm that for your refrigeration mechanic. If it is not, we repair the electrical issue, replace damaged components where appropriate, and arrange ESA notification when required.

A typical site plan may include:

  • Panel review and load discussion
  • Circuit route planning through ceiling, back-of-house or rooftop areas
  • Shutdown timing for occupied businesses
  • Disconnect and receptacle placement
  • Coordination with the refrigeration installer
  • ESA notification and inspection requirements
  • Final labelling, cleanup and handover

Pricing for refrigeration electrical wiring is quoted in writing after a site visit. The cost depends on distance from the panel, finished-wall access, voltage and phase, number of circuits, rooftop or outdoor routing, disconnect requirements, after-hours constraints and whether the existing panel has capacity. City Power provides free written estimates, completes full cleanup, and serves Toronto, North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Vaughan and the wider GTA.

If refrigeration wiring is part of a larger store opening or renovation, we can also connect you with the right related service from our commercial electrical services page, including lighting, data, panels, troubleshooting and food-service electrical work.

Refrigeration Electrical Wiring FAQs

Do I need an electrician or a refrigeration technician?

Most refrigeration projects need both. The refrigeration technician handles the refrigeration piping, charging, controls setup and equipment commissioning. City Power handles the electrical supply: circuits, breakers, disconnects, wiring, grounding, terminations, ESA notification where required and electrical troubleshooting. We coordinate with your refrigeration contractor so the equipment has the correct power before startup.

Can you help if my walk-in cooler keeps tripping the breaker?

Yes. We can check the breaker, wiring, disconnect, receptacle or hardwired connection, voltage, loose terminations and signs of heat or damage. If the electrical supply is sound, the issue may be inside the refrigeration equipment, such as a motor, compressor or defrost component. We will separate the electrical problem from the mechanical refrigeration problem.

Does refrigeration electrical wiring need an ESA permit?

Many new circuits, altered wiring, panel changes and commercial electrical additions require ESA notification in Ontario. City Power handles refrigeration electrical wiring as a Licensed Electrical Contractor, ECRA/ESA #7015314, with ESA permits and inspections completed where required. We tell you during the estimate what notification and inspection steps apply to your project.

How fast can you respond to a cooler-down situation?

City Power offers 24/7 emergency service. For a cooler-down call, we focus on making the electrical system safe, checking whether power is reaching the refrigeration equipment, and identifying damaged wiring, failed disconnects or breaker issues. If the fault is mechanical, your refrigeration technician can continue with clear information about the electrical supply.
