Outdoor outlet work means weather-rated power where you actually use it

Outdoor outlets and holiday lighting circuits are for the places extension cords should not be doing permanent work: front porch railings, soffits, garage faces, backyard patios, sheds, fence lines, planters, and landscaped areas.

For most homes, the scope is not a full landscape lighting system. It is practical exterior power: a receptacle near the front door for wreaths, a switched outlet under the eaves for roofline lights, a GFCI-protected patio outlet for a smoker or water feature, or a dedicated circuit so December lighting is not sharing a tired living room circuit.

Typical work can include:

  • Weather-resistant outdoor receptacles rated for exterior use
  • In-use covers that protect cords while plugged in
  • GFCI protection at the receptacle or breaker
  • New wiring from the panel, garage, basement, or attic
  • Dedicated switches, timers, or smart controls for lighting loads
  • Surface conduit where fishing wire is not practical
  • Proper boxes, fittings, strain relief, and drip protection
  • Labelling at the panel and cleanup when the work is done

If you are planning a larger exterior lighting project with permanent fixtures, path lights, wall sconces, or low-voltage landscape lighting, start with our outdoor lighting electrical service. This page is specifically for the outlet and circuit side: safe, convenient power in the right exterior locations.

You need a dedicated circuit when the seasonal load is more than occasional

A single small string of LED lights does not usually justify a new circuit. Problems start when the load grows across rooflines, trees, inflatables, porch displays, timers, and multiple extension cords running through doors or windows.

We often see outdoor lighting setups where the first sign of trouble is nuisance tripping, flickering, a warm cord end, or a GFCI that trips whenever it rains. Those symptoms can point to overloaded shared circuits, damaged cord caps, water entering old covers, poor splices, or a receptacle that was never meant to sit outside year-round.

A dedicated holiday lighting circuit is useful when:

  • You run multiple exterior displays every winter
  • Your front porch outlet is tied into interior rooms
  • Breakers trip when lights and indoor loads run together
  • You want one labelled switch or timer for the whole display
  • You need soffit or garage-face outlets without visible cords
  • Existing outside receptacles are loose, corroded, or ungrounded
  • You are adding patio, deck, or landscape power at the same time

Dedicated switching matters because outdoor lighting is not just about power; it is about control. We can install a switch inside the front hall, a timer in the garage, a smart switch, or a weather-appropriate control point depending on the layout. For more advanced scene control across indoor and outdoor lights, see our lighting control systems page.

For seasonal planning, our GTA holiday lighting circuits guide covers common circuit layouts and safety choices homeowners should think through before ladders and clips come out.

Exterior outlets need GFCI protection, weather resistance, and proper covers

Outdoor receptacles live with rain, snow, freeze-thaw cycles, hose spray, road salt, insects, and cords being pulled at awkward angles. That is why the details matter.

For exterior outlets, we use weather-resistant receptacles and covers suitable for the location. Where a cord will stay plugged in while the cover is closed, an in-use cover is the right choice. These are the deeper “bubble” style covers that shield the plug connection during use, not just when the outlet is empty.

GFCI protection is essential for exterior receptacles because people use them around wet concrete, soil, snow, metal ladders, and damp tools. Depending on the circuit, the GFCI protection may be built into the receptacle, supplied by an upstream device, or handled by a breaker at the panel. We test it during the visit and label it so you know where to reset it.

The Ontario Electrical Safety Code sets the rules for exterior wiring methods, box fill, grounding, bonding, GFCI protection, burial where applicable, and weather protection. If new wiring or a new circuit requires an ESA notification, City Power files it where required and the work is inspected. We are a Licensed Electrical Contractor, ECRA/ESA #7015314, founded and run by Sam, a licensed electrician with fifteen-plus years in the trade.

A proper exterior installation also avoids the common shortcuts: indoor-rated boxes outside, flat covers over plugged-in cords, cable pinched behind siding, open knockouts, buried extension cords, unprotected splices, and holiday lights fed from garage door opener outlets with no thought to load.

Before you decorate, the holiday lighting safety checklist is a good companion to this work. It covers cords, ladders, damp locations, timers, and inspection of old light strings.

The visit starts with locations, load, and the cleanest wiring path

We start by asking what you want to plug in and where. A front porch outlet for two light strings is different from a garage soffit circuit feeding roofline lights, tree lights, and yard decorations. A backyard patio outlet is different again if it will serve a grill igniter, fountain pump, projector, or seasonal lights.

On site, we check the panel, available breaker space, grounding, existing exterior receptacles, interior access points, basement or garage ceiling access, and possible cable routes. We also look at how water will drain around the proposed box, whether the cover can open fully, whether cords will cross walkways, and whether the outlet should be switched.

For finished homes, the cleanest route may be from the panel through the basement, garage, attic, or an unfinished ceiling area. Sometimes conduit on the exterior is the least invasive and most honest option, especially for brick, stucco, older homes, or detached garages. We explain the route before work starts so there are no surprises.

Pricing depends on distance from the panel, access, whether a new circuit is needed, wall finishes, device count, and permit requirements. Published price bands that often apply are:

Work typePublished GTA price
Each GFCI outlet installed$120–$180 including parts
Standard outlet or switch replacement$80–$120 each, with volume pricing for whole-home refreshes
Specialty devices — GFCI, USB-C combo outlets, smart dimmers, timers$120–$250 installed depending on the device
Typical 20A dedicated circuit from the panel$250–$500 depending on distance and wall finish
Heavier 30A–50A circuits$400–$900

Outdoor outlet packages that do not fit those published bands are quoted in writing after a site visit. City Power provides free written estimates, 24/7 emergency service, ESA notification and inspection where required, and full cleanup. We serve Toronto and the GTA, including North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, and nearby communities. Outdoor Outlets and Holiday Lighting Circuits FAQs

Can you install outlets under the soffit for Christmas lights?

Yes. Soffit or upper-wall outlets are a common way to avoid extension cords hanging from windows, doors, or garage interiors. We confirm the wiring route, install weather-rated boxes and covers, provide GFCI protection, and can add a switch or timer so the roofline lights are controlled from a convenient location.

Do exterior outlets need GFCI protection in Ontario?

Exterior receptacles should be GFCI-protected because they are used in wet and damp conditions. The protection can be at the receptacle, upstream on the same circuit, or at the breaker depending on the wiring layout. We test the device, label the reset location, and correct unsafe older outdoor outlets when found.

Can one circuit handle all my holiday lights?

It depends on the total load, the type of lights, and what else shares the circuit. Modern LED strings draw far less than older incandescent holiday lights, but inflatables, projectors, and long runs still add up. We calculate the load and may recommend a dedicated 20A circuit for reliable seasonal use.

How much does an outdoor outlet or holiday lighting circuit cost?

A GFCI outlet installed typically costs $120–$180 including parts. A typical 20A dedicated circuit from the panel costs $250–$500 depending on distance and wall finish. Timers and specialty devices range $120–$250 installed depending on the device. Larger exterior packages are quoted in writing after a site visit.
