Square D QO Panel Installation in Toronto & the GTA

City Power installs Square D QO panels for Toronto and GTA homeowners, renovators, and contractors who want that specific breaker family during a panel replacement or service upgrade. We are a Licensed Electrical Contractor, ECRA/ESA #7015314, and every job is permitted with the ESA where required and inspected.

Square D QO Panel Installation in Toronto & the GTA

Square D QO is a premium panel choice when you want the QO breaker family, not just any Square D panel

Square D QO is a load centre and breaker family used for residential and light commercial distribution panels. It suits homeowners who are replacing an older fuse or breaker panel, contractors standardizing a renovation around QO breakers, and owners planning future electrical loads such as an EV charger, heat pump equipment, workshop circuits, or a finished basement.

The important detail is compatibility. QO is not the same as Square D Homeline. Breakers must match the approved panelboard label inside the panel, and mixing incompatible breakers is not acceptable even if something appears to fit. A QO installation should be planned as a QO panel with listed QO breakers and accessories, not as a place to reuse miscellaneous breakers from another panel family.

QO can make sense when you want a clean, serviceable panel with clear circuit labelling, enough physical spaces, and room for modern protection requirements. During planning, we look at:

  • Existing service size: 60A, 100A, 125A, or 200A
  • Main breaker rating and utility service capacity
  • Whether the existing panel is overloaded, corroded, crowded, or poorly labelled
  • Required AFCI and GFCI protection for new or altered circuits
  • Space for a panel-mounted surge protector
  • Future two-pole spaces for EV charging, ranges, dryers, HVAC, hot tubs, or sub-panels

If you are comparing panel families, the closest Square D alternative is Square D Homeline panel installation. We can also quote other listed panel families such as Siemens panel installation or Eaton panel installation where that better fits the project.

The electrical requirements depend on the load calculation, not the panel brand alone

A Square D QO panel does not automatically mean a service upgrade. The service size and load calculation determine whether the job is a panel swap, a panel replacement with cleanup, or a full service upgrade involving the meter base, service entrance conductors, grounding, utility coordination, and ESA inspection.

For a straight panel replacement, the incoming service capacity may stay the same while the old distribution equipment is replaced with a new QO panel. This is common when the existing service size is adequate, the utility service is acceptable, and the main issue is an outdated, damaged, full, or poorly organized panel.

For a service upgrade, the work goes beyond the panel. A 100A-to-200A upgrade may require utility disconnect and reconnect, a new meter base or service mast depending on the site, new service conductors, updated grounding and bonding, and confirmation that the local utility can reconnect the upgraded service. Toronto Hydro, Alectra, Hydro One, Elexicon, Oshawa Power, Oakville Hydro, Burlington Hydro, and other GTA utilities each have their own coordination steps.

Breaker selection is part of the design, not an afterthought. New or modified circuits may require AFCI protection, GFCI protection, or both under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, outdoor receptacles, laundry areas, and finished living spaces each need to be reviewed properly. Two-pole loads such as EV chargers, ranges, dryers, air conditioning, spas, and generators also affect panel space and load calculation.

If future EV charging is likely, we plan the QO panel with capacity and physical space in mind. That does not mean every home has enough electrical capacity today. If capacity is tight, the options may include load management, changing the planned charger output, or upgrading the service. For charger planning, see our panel upgrade service and the product pages for chargers such as ChargePoint Home Flex installation.

The installation involves ESA notification, safe shutdown, panel mounting, terminations, testing, and inspection

A proper QO panel installation starts before the old panel is opened. We verify the service, inspect grounding and bonding, identify existing circuits, check available wall space and working clearance, and decide whether utility disconnect/reconnect is needed. Panel replacement or service upgrade work requires ESA notification where required, and service work often needs utility coordination so the equipment can be safely de-energized and reconnected.

On installation day, the power is shut down for the panel work. The old panel cover and breakers are removed, branch circuits are identified, and the existing conductors are assessed for length, condition, and proper cable entry. The new QO panel is mounted securely, fitted with approved connectors, and wired with listed QO breakers matching the panelboard label.

We do not treat breaker swapping as a cosmetic task. Each circuit needs the correct breaker type and amp rating for the conductor and load. A 14 AWG copper lighting circuit, a 12 AWG receptacle circuit, a 240V dryer circuit, and an EV charger circuit are not interchangeable. Multi-wire branch circuits, shared neutrals, aluminum branch wiring, knob-and-tube remnants, and doubled neutrals need to be identified and corrected properly instead of hidden inside a new cabinet.

Testing includes confirming breaker operation, neutral and bonding separation where applicable, grounding continuity, correct labelling, GFCI/AFCI function where installed, and voltage at representative outlets or equipment. If a panel-mounted surge protector is included, it is installed on the appropriate breaker connection and labelled. We also clean up the work area and leave the panel schedule usable, not filled with vague labels like “lights” or “plugs” everywhere.

The ESA inspection checks that the installation follows the notification scope and applicable code requirements. For a service upgrade, the inspector and utility coordination are especially important because the service equipment cannot be treated like an ordinary branch circuit repair.

Cost, timeline, and alternatives depend on whether QO is the right fit for the whole system

A Square D QO panel installation is quoted in writing after a site visit unless it falls into a published service-upgrade band. The product family matters, but the larger cost drivers are service size, access, grounding, utility coordination, number of circuits, AFCI/GFCI requirements, surge protection, wall condition, and whether the existing wiring has defects that must be corrected.

For a Square D QO panel upgrade from 100A to 200A in the GTA, the usual price is $3,200–$4,500, including the panel, labour, ESA permit, and inspection. Moving from a 60A fuse panel to a Square D QO setup generally costs $4,000–$6,000, since the service entrance and meter base often have to be replaced as well. If the job is only a panel replacement without a service size increase, or if it involves unusual site conditions, it is quoted in writing after a site visit.

Timeline is also site-specific. A straightforward panel replacement is planned around a power shutdown and ESA process. A service upgrade adds utility scheduling and may require more lead time before the physical work date. If Toronto Hydro, Alectra, Hydro One, or another local utility must disconnect and reconnect service conductors, that step is built into the schedule before we commit to the work window.

QO is the right choice when you specifically want the QO breaker family, a clean panel layout, and a plan that accounts for present and future loads. It may not be the right choice if the rest of the home has unsafe branch wiring, active knob-and-tube, unremediated aluminum wiring, or a service that is already too small for the equipment you plan to add. In those cases, the panel brand is secondary to correcting the system design.

Homeline may be a better fit for some budget-sensitive residential projects. Siemens or Eaton may make more sense where matching existing equipment, availability, or contractor specifications point that way. A smart panel may be worth discussing where circuit-level monitoring and load control are the main goals; see Span Smart Panel installation for that category.

Common questions

Can I install QO breakers in a Square D Homeline panel?

No. Breaker type must match the approved panelboard label. QO and Homeline are different Square D families, and mixing incompatible breakers is not acceptable.

Does a Square D QO panel installation require an ESA permit?

Panel replacement or service upgrade work requires ESA notification where required and inspection. City Power files the ESA notification for our scope when required and coordinates the inspection process.

Do I need a 200A service for a QO panel?

Not automatically. The load calculation, existing service size, and planned equipment determine whether the project is a panel swap or a service upgrade. EV chargers, hot tubs, electric heating, and future renovation loads can change that decision.
