Lutron RadioRA 3 Installation in Toronto & the GTA

RadioRA 3 is a whole-home Lutron lighting control system for homes that need more than a few smart switches. City Power Electrical Services installs the electrical devices and wiring to Ontario code, with the programming scope confirmed in the written estimate after a site visit.

Lutron RadioRA 3 Installation in Toronto & the GTA

RadioRA 3 is for larger homes that need planned lighting control, not one-off smart switches

Lutron RadioRA 3 is a professionally planned lighting control system for homes where the goal is scenes, schedules, occupancy control, and multi-room control from keypads, dimmers, switches, and app-based control. It suits larger Toronto and GTA homes where the lighting plan has zones: kitchen task lights, island pendants, dining chandelier, stair lighting, exterior sconces, pathway lighting, and main-floor scenes that should work together.

This is different from swapping one device at a time. A proper RadioRA 3 project starts with a device layout, processor placement, keypad planning, and programming decisions. Before any device is installed, someone needs to decide which loads are controlled by which dimmers, where keypads belong, what each button does, and how the homeowner will use schedules or occupancy control.

City Power installs Lutron RadioRA 3 systems as a Licensed Electrical Contractor, ECRA/ESA #7015314. For RadioRA 3 work, we focus on the part that must be right before the system can be reliable: safe electrical installation, corrected boxes where needed, proper terminations, code-compliant wiring, and ESA notification and inspection where required. The written estimate confirms whether the scope is electrical installation only, coordination with your designer or automation provider, or any programming support included for that specific project.

RadioRA 3 is worth considering when you want a clean keypad look instead of rows of dimmers, when several rooms need to respond together, or when a renovation is already opening walls and ceilings. If the project is only one or two rooms, a smaller system such as Lutron Caséta installation may be the more practical choice.

The electrical work depends on the existing lighting circuits, neutral conductors, box fill, and LED compatibility

Most RadioRA 3 lighting controls are installed on existing 120 V lighting branch circuits, not on a new high-amperage circuit. In a typical retrofit, the key electrical questions are not “does the house have enough service for RadioRA 3?” but rather: are the existing switch boxes deep enough, are neutrals present where the selected devices need them, are the conductors in good condition, and are the LED fixtures or drivers compatible with the dimming device selected.

Box fill matters. Older Toronto homes often have shallow metal boxes, multiple cables, ground conductors, and splices already crowded behind the existing switch. A smart dimmer or keypad is deeper than a basic toggle switch. If the box cannot safely contain the conductors and device, the fix may be a larger box, an extension where appropriate, or rewiring that location. Stuffing the device into an overfilled box is not acceptable work.

Neutrals also matter. Some controls require a neutral conductor in the switch box. Many older switch loops were wired without a neutral at the switch location. If the selected RadioRA 3 device needs a neutral and the box does not have one, the options are to select a compatible device where allowed, rework the wiring, or pull a new cable from an accessible point. That decision affects drywall, access, cost, and timeline.

Load compatibility is the other common failure point. LED fixtures, low-voltage drivers, magnetic or electronic transformers, under-cabinet drivers, and decorative fixtures do not all dim the same way. Symptoms of a mismatch include flicker, buzzing, lights that will not turn fully off, limited dimming range, or nuisance dropouts when several loads are grouped. Before installing devices, the lighting schedule should identify fixture type, wattage, driver type where known, and which loads are ganged together.

Panel capacity is usually not a major issue for control-only work because the lighting loads already exist. It becomes relevant if the project adds new lighting circuits, exterior loads, motorized shades, equipment receptacles, or other renovation wiring at the same time. Any new wiring, breaker changes, or altered circuits must follow the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and City Power files ESA notifications where required.

Installation starts with the device schedule, then moves through wiring, mounting, testing, and ESA inspection where required

A clean RadioRA 3 installation starts with a walk-through and device schedule. We identify which existing switches control which lights, which boxes are single-pole or multi-location, where keypads will replace banks of switches, and where any new cable routes are needed. In finished homes, we also look for access through basements, attics, closets, unfinished utility rooms, and existing openings so the estimate reflects the actual building, not a generic smart-home price.

Processor placement is part of the plan. The RadioRA 3 processor needs to be located where it can support the home’s control layout and be supplied as the product requires. We do not bury equipment in inaccessible spots or leave control hardware hanging from temporary cords. If network equipment, structured wiring, or low-voltage cabling is involved, the physical location should be coordinated before walls are closed.

For the electrical installation, power is shut off to the affected circuits, existing devices are removed, and each box is checked before the new device is installed. We verify line and load conductors, grounding and bonding, traveller wiring at multi-location controls, conductor condition, and whether existing splices need correction. Where new wiring is part of the scope, it is installed using approved cable, boxes, connectors, and support methods for the location.

Testing is not just “the light turns on.” Each controlled load should be tested for full on, full off, dimming range, flicker, heat at the device, correct multi-location operation, and correct keypad response once programmed by the responsible party. Occupancy controls and schedules should be checked against the way the room is actually used; a hallway, pantry, powder room, and open kitchen do not need the same behaviour.

If ESA inspection is required for the work, the notification is filed and the inspector checks the parts of the installation under the permit scope. That can include box fill, grounding and bonding, conductor terminations, breaker and conductor suitability, wiring methods, device installation, and any new branch-circuit work. City Power’s jobs are permitted with the ESA where required and inspected, and we do full cleanup when the work is complete.

Cost, timeline, and whether RadioRA 3 is the right choice are decided after the site visit

RadioRA 3 projects are quoted in writing after a site visit because the price depends on the number of devices, keypad locations, processor location, box corrections, neutral availability, LED driver compatibility, drywall access, and whether programming is included or handled by a separate provider.

For simple smart control work, the published City Power price sheet says: Smart dimmers and switches run $150–$250 each installed, including professional-grade devices like Lutron Caseta or Leviton Decora Smart. For a typical main-floor Lutron RadioRA 3 setup, 8–12 smart switches with the hub installed and app configured usually runs $1,500–$2,800. RadioRA 3 is normally more design-heavy than a basic smart-switch package, so it should be quoted from a device schedule rather than assumed from a per-switch number.

Timeline also depends on scope. A small retrofit with accessible boxes may be completed quickly once devices are on site. A larger main-floor or whole-home RadioRA 3 project can require more planning time, especially if keypads replace multi-gang switch banks, neutrals must be added, shallow boxes need correction, or fixture compatibility has to be tested before final programming.

RadioRA 3 is the right choice when you want a permanent lighting control system that feels built into the home: engraved-style keypad locations, scenes for entertaining or daily routines, scheduled exterior lighting, occupancy logic, and fewer visible switch banks. It is also a good fit during renovations, when wiring changes can be made before finishes are closed.

It may be more system than you need if you only want a few app-controlled dimmers, a timer for exterior lights, or a handful of voice-controlled switches. In that case, start with our smart home electrical service or compare simpler device options from the product installation hub. The best answer is the one that matches the house, the wiring, and the way you actually use the rooms.

Common questions

Does City Power program Lutron RadioRA 3 systems?

The programming scope is confirmed in the written estimate after the site visit. Some projects are electrical installation only, especially when a lighting designer or automation provider supplies the RadioRA 3 design and programming.

Can RadioRA 3 be installed in an older Toronto home?

Often, yes, but the retrofit must be checked carefully. Older homes may have shallow boxes, no neutral in switch boxes, brittle conductors, or LED fixtures that need compatibility testing before the final device list is chosen.

Does RadioRA 3 usually require a panel upgrade?

Not usually for control-only replacements, because the lighting loads already exist. A panel or circuit change may be needed if the project adds new lighting circuits, exterior loads, or other renovation wiring at the same time.
