Lutron Caséta Installation in Toronto & the GTA

Lutron Caséta is a clean smart-lighting upgrade for rooms where reliability matters

Lutron Caséta is a smart lighting control system built around in-wall dimmers, switches, Pico remotes and a Smart Bridge that connects the lighting controls to an app and compatible voice-control platforms. It suits homeowners who want dependable control at the wall first, with app schedules and remote control as the add-on — not the other way around.

Caséta is a strong fit for main-floor lighting, bedrooms, exterior coach lights, basement rec rooms and renovated spaces where the switches are used every day. It is especially useful when you want scenes like “all off,” “evening,” or “movie,” without opening walls for a full lighting-control system.

The important part is selecting the right device before anything is installed. Dimmer selection depends on LED load compatibility, neutral availability, and single-pole versus multi-way switching. A dimmer that works perfectly on one set of recessed LEDs may flicker, buzz, fail to turn off fully, or have poor low-end dimming on another load.

Pico remotes are one of the reasons many Toronto homes choose Caséta. They can simplify multi-location control where rewiring is impractical, such as an older stair switch, a long hallway, or a room where a second control location would otherwise require fishing cable through finished walls. A Pico can be wall-mounted to look like a normal switch location, but it communicates wirelessly with the Caséta control.

City Power Electrical Services installs Lutron Caséta systems as a Licensed Electrical Contractor, ECRA/ESA #7015314. The electrical requirements are simple only after the existing switch box is verified

Most Caséta installations use the existing 120 V lighting circuit. The breaker size, conductor type, box fill, grounding, switch leg and neutral availability all need to be checked before choosing the device. A smart switch or dimmer is not a reason to upsize a breaker; the breaker must stay matched to the circuit wiring and the connected load.

The first question is what the switch actually controls. Recessed LED fixtures, chandeliers with LED lamps, under-cabinet lighting, exterior fixtures and switched receptacles behave differently. Some loads should not be dimmed at all. Others require a forward-phase or neutral-wire device, and some need a minimum connected load to operate correctly.

The second question is whether the box has a neutral conductor. Some Caséta dimmers are designed for applications without a neutral, which is useful in many older Toronto and GTA homes. Other Caséta switches and specialty controls may require a neutral. Opening the plate and seeing white wires is not enough; the wiring must be tested and identified, because white conductors are sometimes used as switch legs in older wiring methods.

The third question is single-pole versus multi-way control. A standard three-way or four-way setup can often be converted using one wired Caséta control and one or more Pico remotes, depending on the existing wiring and the intended control layout. This avoids unnecessary drywall openings in many finished homes.

Panel capacity is usually not the limiting factor for a control replacement because the lighting load already exists. It becomes relevant if we are adding new lighting, adding a new switch leg, correcting overloaded boxes, separating mixed loads, or installing new circuits as part of a renovation. If panel space or service capacity is part of the larger project, we may recommend a panel upgrade or new dedicated circuits as a separate scope.

Smart Bridge placement also matters. The bridge needs reliable access to the home network, and router location affects app and voice-control reliability. We look for a practical location near the router or network equipment, away from problem spots such as crowded metal cabinets or weak Wi-Fi areas. Caséta’s lighting communication is separate from normal Wi-Fi, but the bridge still needs stable network access for app control and integrations.

Installation includes device selection, safe replacement, programming and required inspection steps

A good Caséta installation starts with a walkthrough, not a shopping list. We identify each controlled load, count fixture wattage where practical, check dimming behaviour, open representative switch boxes, confirm neutrals and grounding, and map any three-way or four-way switching. That tells us whether each location should use a dimmer, switch, Pico remote, plug-in lamp module, or no smart device at all.

For in-wall devices, power is shut off and verified before removal. We check the box condition, conductor length, grounding, splice quality and device depth. Smart controls are bulkier than standard toggle switches, so crowded older boxes can be a real issue. If a box is too small or damaged, it may need correction before the control is installed.

New wiring or device installation should be handled under Ontario electrical requirements. City Power files ESA notifications where required, performs the work to the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and arranges inspection where required. Every job is permitted with the ESA where required and inspected, and we complete full cleanup.

After mounting, we test each circuit at the wall before pairing. For dimmers, that means checking on/off operation, dimming range, low-end trim where applicable, and whether the LED load flickers or drops out. For multi-location control, we test the wired device and Pico remote positions so the room works naturally for anyone walking in.

Bridge setup comes last. We connect the Smart Bridge, pair the controls, name rooms and devices clearly, and confirm app control. If voice control is part of the scope, router access and account permissions need to be available during setup. We do not guess passwords or take over unrelated network configuration; we coordinate the electrical and device setup needed for the lighting controls to work.

If the project is part of a broader renovation with new pot lights, receptacles or rewiring, we coordinate Caséta controls with that work. See pot light installation, switches and outlets, and wiring and rewiring for the related electrical scope.

Cost, timeline and the right choice depend on how many controls and how complex the switching is

Published pricing for this category is straightforward: smart dimmers and switches run $150–$250 each installed, including professional-grade devices like Lutron Caseta or Leviton Decora Smart. A typical main-floor package of 8–12 smart switches with hub setup and app configuration costs $1,500–$2,800.

Anything outside that pattern is quoted in writing after a site visit. Examples include adding new switch locations, correcting missing neutrals, replacing undersized boxes, adding pot lights, repairing unsafe splices, troubleshooting LED flicker, or integrating smart controls into a larger renovation. City Power provides free written estimates, and larger scopes are priced before work begins.

Timeline also depends on the wiring. A straightforward switch-for-switch installation is service work. A whole main floor with multi-way controls, Pico placement, bridge setup and app configuration takes more coordination. If walls are finished and new wiring is needed, the route, patching expectations and ESA inspection timing are discussed before the estimate is finalized.

Caséta is the right choice when you want reliable smart control without moving into a fully designed whole-home lighting system. It is usually a better fit than Wi-Fi-only switches when you have many lighting controls, because the Smart Bridge reduces dependence on a crowded Wi-Fi network. It is also easier to live with than app-only lighting because the wall controls still feel familiar.

Caséta is not always the best choice. If you are planning a large custom home, keypad-heavy design, centralized scenes across many rooms, or higher-end integration, Lutron RadioRA 3 installation may be the better Lutron path. If you only need one basic smart switch and do not care about Pico remotes, scenes or hub-based reliability, another device may be sufficient.

Common questions

Can Lutron Caséta work in an older Toronto home with no neutral at the switch?

Often, yes, but it depends on the exact device and the lighting load. Some Caséta dimmers are designed for no-neutral applications, while other switches or controls may require a neutral. We open and test the box before recommending the device.

Can a Pico remote replace a three-way switch?

In many situations, yes. A wired Caséta control can be paired with a Pico remote to provide multi-location control without fishing new cable. The existing wiring still needs to be assessed so the final setup is safe and intuitive.

What does Lutron Caséta installation cost in the GTA?

Smart dimmers and switches run $150–$250 each installed. A typical main-floor package of 8–12 smart switches with hub setup and app configuration costs $1,500–$2,800. More complex wiring or device correction is quoted in writing after a site visit.
