Leviton Decora Smart Installation in Toronto & the GTA

Leviton Decora Smart suits homes that want smart control in a familiar switch style

Leviton Decora Smart is a family of smart wall controls that replace standard switches and dimmers while keeping the common Decora rectangular look. It is a good fit when you want smart control at the wall, not just smart bulbs in the fixture.

Homeowners usually choose Decora Smart when they already like the Leviton style, want to keep matching wall plates through the house, or need a mix of switches, dimmers, fan controls, and companion devices. It can work well for kitchens, hallways, exterior lights, bedrooms, rec rooms, and main-floor lighting scenes.

The important part is choosing the right device before the wall box is opened. Decora Smart includes different product versions for different ecosystems, including Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Matter, or other platform requirements depending on the model. That choice affects hub requirements, app setup, voice assistant compatibility, and how multi-way switching is handled.

This page is for homeowners who have already narrowed the platform to Leviton and now need a licensed electrician to confirm the wiring, install the devices cleanly, and avoid the usual smart-switch problems: no neutral in the box, LED flicker, overloaded boxes, incompatible three-way wiring, and switches that drop offline because the wrong model was selected.

The electrical requirements depend on the wall-box wiring, lighting load, and control type

Most Decora Smart installations are not about panel capacity; they are about what is inside the switch box. Many smart switches require a neutral wire in the wall box so the electronics inside the switch can stay powered even when the light is off. Older Toronto homes, especially houses with switch loops or older renovations, may not have a neutral at the switch location.

We check the box before recommending a device. A white wire in the box is not automatically a neutral; older switch loops can use white as a switched conductor. We identify line, load, neutral, ground, travellers, and any shared neutrals before connecting a smart device.

The next issue is the load. LED dimming compatibility and minimum load must be checked to avoid flicker, ghosting, buzzing, or dropouts. Some LED fixtures dim smoothly with one dimmer and poorly with another. Pot lights, chandeliers with replaceable LED lamps, low-voltage drivers, under-cabinet lighting, and exterior fixtures can all behave differently.

We also look at the rating of the circuit and device. Most lighting circuits are existing 120V branch circuits, but the smart control still has to match the lighting load, gang-box conditions, and device type. A dimmer is not a general switch. A fan control is not a light dimmer. A relay switch may be better than a dimmer for non-dimmable fixtures.

Multi-way circuits need extra care. A standard three-way or four-way circuit cannot always keep the old mechanical switches in place. Some Decora Smart models require compatible companion switches, remotes, or approved wiring changes. We verify which box has the feed, which box has the switched leg, and whether the travellers can be reused safely.

If the box is too crowded, damaged, ungrounded, or missing a usable neutral, the job becomes more than a device swap. It may require a larger box, new cable, a wiring correction, or a different product choice. Where wiring is added or altered, City Power files the ESA notification where required and has the work inspected.

The installation starts with testing, then wiring, setup, and verification

A proper Decora Smart installation starts before the switch is removed. We identify the circuit, confirm the breaker, test for voltage, and document the existing wiring. This matters most in older Toronto and GTA homes where boxes have been modified over time, colours are inconsistent, or a three-way circuit has been changed by a previous owner.

For a straightforward single-pole location, we remove the existing switch, confirm line and load, connect the Decora Smart device according to the listed wiring method, bond the ground, fold the conductors without damaging insulation, and mount the device squarely so the wall plate sits flat.

For dimmers, we test the fixture at low, medium, and high output. We watch for flicker, shimmer, delayed start, buzzing, dropouts, or lamps that stay faintly lit when off. If the fixture has selectable colour temperature or an electronic driver, we check behaviour before calling the installation complete.

For multi-way circuits, we map the traveller conductors and install the required companion device or approved wiring arrangement for the selected Decora Smart model. This is where many DIY installs fail: the lights work from one end but not the other, the app shows the wrong state, or the smart switch loses power when the remote switch is toggled.

After the electrical side is complete, we help with basic pairing and naming if requested. That may include connecting to the home network or hub, confirming app control, testing schedules or scenes, and making sure manual wall control still works normally. We do not bury problems behind the app; the switch must work safely and predictably at the wall first.

If ESA notification is required, we file it, coordinate the inspection, and leave the work area cleaned up. Cost, timeline, and whether Decora Smart is the right choice

Smart dimmers and switches run $150–$250 each installed, including professional-grade devices like Lutron Caseta or Leviton Decora Smart. A typical main-floor package of 8–12 smart switches with hub setup and app configuration costs $1,500–$2,800. If the work involves missing neutrals, new wiring, crowded boxes, damaged devices, or complex multi-way corrections, it is quoted in writing after a site visit.

Most single-location replacements are quick once the correct device is on site and the wiring is suitable. A group of switches on one floor usually takes longer because each box has to be opened, identified, labelled, connected, tested, and set up in the app or hub. If ESA inspection is required for wiring changes, the inspection timeline depends on scope and availability.

Decora Smart is often the right choice if you want hardwired controls that still feel like normal switches, especially where guests, children, or tenants need reliable wall control. It is also a strong fit when you want to keep a consistent Decora look across the home.

It may not be the best choice if the home has no neutrals in the key switch boxes and you do not want to open walls or fish new cable. In that case, another smart-switch platform, smart bulbs, plug-in modules, or a more centralized approach may be better. If your project is growing beyond switches into load monitoring and circuit-level control, compare it with a Span Smart Panel installation.

If the smart lighting work is part of a larger renovation, we can coordinate it with dedicated circuits, panel work, pot lights, exterior lighting, or low-voltage planning. For EV owners also planning home automation around charging schedules, see our ChargePoint Home Flex installation page for a separate dedicated-circuit project.

The best next step is a short site visit. We open representative switch boxes, confirm neutrals, check lighting loads, review your preferred ecosystem, and provide a free written estimate. Common questions

Can you install Leviton Decora Smart switches if my Toronto home has no neutral wire?

Sometimes, but it depends on the device and the circuit. Many smart switches require a neutral in the wall box. We verify the wiring first, then recommend the correct device, a wiring correction, or an alternative control method.

Why do LED lights flicker after a smart dimmer is installed?

Flicker usually comes from dimmer and LED driver incompatibility, too little load on the dimmer, non-dimmable lamps, or incorrect wiring. We test the fixture through the full dimming range before finishing the installation.

Do Leviton Decora Smart switches need an ESA permit?

A simple compatible device replacement may not require the same process as new wiring, but added or altered wiring does. City Power files ESA notification and arranges inspection wherever required.
