Autel MaxiCharger Installation in Toronto & the GTA

City Power installs Autel MaxiCharger Level 2 home EV chargers across Toronto and the GTA, including circuit sizing, mounting, ESA notification where required, and inspection. The important step is matching the charger setting to the breaker, conductor size, panel capacity, and the exact Canadian Autel model you buy.

Autel MaxiCharger Installation in Toronto & the GTA

Autel MaxiCharger suits drivers who want an app-connected Level 2 charger with flexible installation options

Autel MaxiCharger is a residential Level 2 EV charger line for homeowners who want faster charging than a standard 120V cord and a cleaner permanent setup in the garage, carport, or driveway. It is a good fit when you have a daily commute, want scheduled charging, or need a dedicated charging location instead of sharing a general-purpose receptacle.

Autel AC home chargers come in plug-in and hardwired versions depending on the model. That matters before installation, because a plug-in unit needs the correct receptacle, box, cover, and mounting location, while a hardwired unit connects directly to the branch circuit and is usually preferred for higher-output or outdoor installs.

For current Canadian Autel home models, we size the job from Autel’s Canadian spec sheet and the rating label on the charger, not from a generic online listing:

Canadian Autel home modelConnection styleMaximum charging output to plan around
MaxiCharger AC Wallbox Home 40APlug-in or hardwired, depending on SKUUp to 40A / 9.6 kW
MaxiCharger AC Wallbox Home 50AHardwired, depending on SKUUp to 50A / 12 kW

The charger’s advertised maximum is not automatically the setting we use. The output must be configured to the actual circuit, breaker, conductors, panel capacity, and Ontario Electrical Safety Code requirements. If you are still comparing chargers, our EV charger installation service explains the site checks that matter before choosing the final model.

The electrical requirements depend on the selected amperage, breaker, wiring route, and available panel capacity

The charger must be set to a safe output for the circuit feeding it. EV charging is a continuous load, so the breaker size and conductor size are not chosen casually, and a 50A breaker does not mean every charger can be set to deliver 50A. We confirm the manufacturer’s instructions, the OESC requirements, and the actual installation conditions before setting the internal or app-based current limit.

For a plug-in Autel model, the common planning point is a 240V receptacle circuit at the charger location. The receptacle must match the charger plug, be installed in a suitable box, and be protected from physical damage. In a garage, that may mean placing it high enough to keep the cord off the floor. Outdoors, it means a weather-rated enclosure, proper cover, and a wiring method suitable for exposure.

For a hardwired Autel model, the circuit terminates directly inside the charger. This avoids a receptacle connection point and is often cleaner for driveway, exterior wall, and higher-output installs. Outdoor driveway installations need a weather-rated mounting surface and a protected wiring route. We look for masonry, framed wall backing, a post or pedestal location, conduit routing, snow clearance, vehicle impact risk, and whether the cable can reach the charge port without crossing a walkway.

Panel capacity is the other major issue. We check the main service size, existing large loads, available breaker spaces, grounding and bonding, and whether the panel is already crowded or obsolete. If capacity is tight, a load-management device can sometimes allow EV charging without a service upgrade. See the DCC-9 installation page and Simple Switch installation page for examples of EV load-management products.

The installation includes ESA notification, mounting, wiring, charger setup, testing, and inspection coordination

A proper Autel MaxiCharger installation starts with the site conditions, then follows the permit and inspection path. ESA notification applies to new EV charging circuits in Ontario. City Power Electrical Services is a Licensed Electrical Contractor, ECRA/ESA #7015314, and every job is permitted with the ESA where required and inspected.

The usual steps are straightforward. First, we confirm the charger model, preferred location, panel condition, wire path, and whether the charger will be plug-in or hardwired. Then we provide a free written estimate. If the work proceeds, we file the ESA notification where required, install the breaker and wiring, mount the charger, make the terminations, and label the circuit.

Mounting is not just cosmetic. The Autel unit needs to sit at a practical height, have enough clearance for the cable and holster, and be fastened to a surface that can handle repeated cord use. In a finished garage, we may need to fish cable through walls or ceilings. In an unfinished garage, conduit or surface routing may be cleaner and easier to inspect. For an exterior driveway location, we choose wiring methods and fittings that suit wet locations and physical exposure.

Testing includes verifying voltage, polarity where applicable, breaker operation, charger startup, the selected output setting, and a vehicle or charger-side charging test where possible. We also check that the circuit directory is updated and that the installation is ready for ESA inspection. After the electrical work, we clean up the work area.

Condo and rental situations need extra coordination. A condominium board, property manager, parking garage rules, metering arrangement, or landlord approval can affect the installation route. We can quote the electrical scope, but approvals and building rules must be confirmed with the proper authority.

Cost, timeline, and charger choice depend on distance, finish, capacity, and whether Autel is the best fit

A straightforward Level 2 installation in the GTA — panel nearby, capacity available — runs $800–$1,500 for labour, materials, and the ESA permit. Longer wire runs or finished walls push it to $1,500–$3,500, and the charger itself adds $500–$1,200. Most homeowners land between $1,500 and $3,000 all-in.

If capacity is tight, a load-management device often avoids a panel upgrade; otherwise we upgrade to 200A ($3,200–$4,500) at the same time. Work that involves trenching, detached garages, underground conduit, condo parking, service upgrades, or unusual mounting is quoted in writing after a site visit.

Timeline is driven by the same factors. A simple attached-garage installation can usually be scheduled as a compact service job once the estimate is approved and the charger is on site. Longer routes, outdoor posts, finished-wall fishing, utility coordination, or panel work take more planning. ESA inspection timing depends on the notification and inspector schedule.

Autel is a strong choice if you like its app features, display options on some models, and the flexibility of plug-in or hardwired home units. It is not the only good option. If you want a widely used app ecosystem, compare ChargePoint Home Flex installation. If you want a simple Canadian-built charger with a rugged enclosure, compare Grizzl-E charger installation. You can also browse other charger options from our product installation hub.

The right answer is the charger that fits your vehicle, parking location, panel capacity, and daily charging needs. For Autel, the key is not just mounting the box. It is setting the charger correctly, protecting the wiring route, filing the ESA notification where required, and leaving you with a safe Level 2 circuit that matches the equipment.

Common questions

Do I need an ESA permit for an Autel MaxiCharger installation?

Yes, ESA notification applies to new EV charging circuits in Ontario where required. City Power files the notification for permitted work and coordinates the inspection process.

Can an Autel MaxiCharger be installed outside on a driveway?

Yes, if the exact model is suitable for the location and the installation uses a weather-rated mounting surface, outdoor-rated wiring method, proper fittings, and a protected route that avoids vehicle and snow damage.

Should I choose plug-in or hardwired for an Autel charger?

Plug-in can be convenient if the model supports it and the receptacle location is suitable. Hardwired is often cleaner for outdoor locations and higher-output installs. We confirm the best option after checking the charger model, panel, and mounting location.
