Faulty wiring rarely fails all at once — it sends warning signs first. Learning to read them is the difference between a planned repair and an emergency. Here are the signals that your home's wiring needs a professional look, grouped from "address soon" to "shut it off now."
Signs to address soon
These point to a developing problem rather than an immediate hazard, but they don't fix themselves:
- **Breakers that trip repeatedly.** Occasional trips are normal; a circuit that trips weekly is overloaded or faulted. Widespread flicker often means a loose connection or an overtaxed panel. - **Two-prong (ungrounded) outlets**, which mean older wiring with no ground path — a shock risk for modern electronics. - **Frequently blown fuses** in a fuse-box home, a sign the service is undersized for today's loads.
Signs that mean stop using it
These indicate heat or arcing — the conditions that start fires. Cut power to the affected circuit and get it inspected promptly:
- **Warm, hot, or discoloured outlets and switches.** Heat at a connection means it's loose or overloaded. - **A burning, acrid, or fishy smell** near an outlet, switch, or the panel — melting insulation. What older GTA homes should watch for
Toronto and the surrounding region have a large stock of homes from the early-to-mid 20th century, and two wiring types from that era are known hazards. Knob-and-tube wiring has no ground and brittle insulation that crumbles when disturbed; many insurers won't cover an active K&T home. Aluminum branch wiring from the 1960s–70s loosens and oxidizes at terminals, creating hot connections unless special connectors are used. A fuse box instead of a breaker panel often signals the whole service is dated.
What to do about it
