Breakers don't tempt people the same way; you can't casually swap a 15-amp breaker for a 30 without it being obvious.

**Undersized service.** Most fuse boxes are 60-amp or 100-amp services, and 60-amp in particular is too small for a modern home with central air, multiple major appliances, and electronics. There's typically no room to add circuits for an EV charger, a hot tub, or a renovation.

**Company it keeps.** A fuse box is often the visible tip of a dated system — knob-and-tube or early aluminum wiring, ungrounded two-prong outlets, and no GFCI or AFCI protection. The panel rarely ages alone.

The insurance reality

Insurers increasingly treat fuse boxes as elevated risk — surcharging premiums, demanding an inspection, or declining to write a policy — especially when paired with old wiring.
