Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's wiring, and it gives clear signals when it's no longer up to the job. Some signs are about capacity, some about safety, and a few mean you should stop and call an electrician now. Here's how to read them.
Capacity signs: the panel has run out of room
These mean your panel can't grow with your home:
- **No free breaker slots.** If every space is full, you can't add circuits for new rooms, appliances, an EV charger, or a hot tub without an upgrade or sub-panel. - **Double-tapped breakers** — two wires crammed under one breaker meant for one — a sign someone ran out of space and improvised. - **Constant reliance on power bars and extension cords**, which usually means too few circuits for how you actually live. - **You're adding major load** — electric heat, a heat pump, a second unit — and a load calculation shows the service is maxed.
Age and obsolescence signs
- **A fuse box instead of breakers**, which typically means the whole service is dated and often undersized — see is a fuse box safe. - **Known-problem brands.** Federal Pioneer Stab-lok and a few other older panels have documented breaker-failure issues and are flagged by many inspectors and insurers. - **Visible corrosion, rust, or water staining** inside or around the panel. - **A panel so old that breakers are hard to source** when one fails.
Safety signs: stop and call
These indicate heat or a failing panel and shouldn't wait:
- **Breakers that trip frequently** across the board, not just one circuit. - **Flickering or dimming lights** throughout the house, which can trace back to loose connections at the panel. - **A warm, hot, or buzzing panel** — loose connections generating heat. - **Scorch marks, melting, or a burning smell** at the panel. This is an emergency: keep clear and call right away. - **Mild shocks** from the panel cover or nearby metal.
