The Level 1 versus Level 2 decision is really about how fast you need to refill and how much you drive. Both charge any EV safely — the difference is speed, and what it takes to install. Here's how to choose.
Level 1: plug into a standard outlet
A Level 1 charger uses an ordinary **120-volt household outlet** — the same kind everything else plugs into. Most EVs come with a Level 1 cord in the trunk, so there's no equipment to buy and, because you're not adding wiring, no ESA permit needed.
The catch is speed: Level 1 adds only about **6–8 km of range per hour**. Over a 10–12 hour overnight charge, that's roughly 60–100 km — enough for a short commute or a plug-in hybrid with a small battery, but slow for a longer-range EV or a high-mileage household. If you regularly drive more than you can replace overnight, Level 1 leaves you starting some days less than full.
Level 2: a dedicated 240-volt circuit
A Level 2 charger runs on a **240-volt circuit** — the same voltage as your dryer or stove — and adds roughly **30–60 km of range per hour**, fully charging most EVs from low in about **4–10 hours**. You plug in at night and wake up at 100%, every day, regardless of how much you drove. This is why most GTA homeowners install Level 2: it turns home charging into something you never think about.
Level 2 requires a dedicated circuit and an ESA permit, and the charger itself (a hardwired unit or a plug-in unit on a 240-volt outlet). Installed cost typically runs **$1,500–$3,000 all-in**, including the permit and inspection.
Which one fits you
Choose **Level 2** if you:
- Drive a typical or higher daily distance and want a guaranteed full charge each morning. - Own a longer-range battery EV. - Value not thinking about charging at all.
**Level 1** can be enough if you:
- Drive a plug-in hybrid or low daily mileage. - Have many hours to charge and rarely deplete the battery. - Want zero installation cost to start.

Before you install Level 2
