The practical rule: about 12 on a 15-amp circuit

Instead, electricians work to a well-established rule of thumb: up to **12 outlets on a standard 15-amp circuit**, and up to about 12 on a 20-amp circuit as well (the heavier wire carries more current, not necessarily more receptacles). Lighting is often counted into this as well.

This rule assumes ordinary, intermittent use — lamps, chargers, a TV, the occasional vacuum. It's a sensible default that keeps a typical living room, bedroom, or hallway well within safe limits.

Why load matters more than count

The breaker doesn't count outlets — it measures current. A 15-amp circuit can safely deliver about 1,440 watts continuously (80% of its rating). A dozen phone chargers and a couple of lamps draw a tiny fraction of that. So the real question is total simultaneous load. High-draw devices — space heaters, window AC units, hair dryers, kettles, microwaves, toasters — each pull enough that they often need a circuit largely to themselves.

Where dedicated circuits are required

Code carves out specific areas precisely because they run heavy loads:

- **Kitchen counter receptacles** must be on dedicated 20-amp circuits, with rules on spacing and split receptacles. - **Bathrooms** require their own circuit. - **Laundry, dishwashers, microwaves, fridges, EV chargers, hot tubs, and electric heat** typically each need a dedicated circuit sized to the appliance.
